Method
- Combine the oats, water or milk, diced apple, cinnamon, and salt in a small saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oats are cooked and the liquid is mostly absorbed. The apple pieces should soften.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the maple syrup or brown sugar, if you are using it.
- Pour the oatmeal into a bowl and serve immediately.

Notes
You can substitute rolled oats with quick oats, which will reduce the cooking time slightly. If you prefer a creamier texture, use milk instead of water.
