Ingredients

For the Donuts
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
For the "Blood" Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp light corn syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring

Equipment

  • Donut pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Saucepan

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a donut pan or spray with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, then stir in the buttermilk, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Spoon or pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about two-thirds full.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the donuts cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. To make the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, corn syrup, and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth.
  10. Stir in the red food coloring until you achieve a blood-like color.
  11. Dip the cooled donuts into the glaze, letting any excess drip off. Place them back on the wire rack to set.

Notes

For a thicker glaze, add more powdered sugar. For a thinner glaze, add a little more milk. You can also add a few drops of black food coloring to deepen the red for a more dramatic effect.
