Chai Tea Latte

This recipe shows you how to make a homemade chai tea concentrate and then use it to prepare a single serving of a chai tea latte.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Concentrate Storage 14 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 1 latte
Course: Drink
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

For the Chai Concentrate
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 black tea bags (like English breakfast) or 4 grams of loose-leaf tea leaves
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  • 2 TB pure maple syrup
To Make a Latte (per serving)
  • 1/2 cup chai tea concentrate from the recipe above
  • 3/4 cup whole milk or dairy-free milk (coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk)
  • 1 TB pure maple syrup or honey
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon

Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • fine mesh strainer
  • immersion blender or fork

Method

  1. Combine the water, tea bags or loose-leaf tea, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, allspice, and 2 tablespoons of maple syrup in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. This makes the concentrate.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer to remove the spices and tea. You now have the chai concentrate. This concentrate stores for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
  4. To make one latte, combine 1/2 cup of the chai tea concentrate, 3/4 cup of milk, 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or honey, and a pinch of ground cinnamon in a small saucepan.
  5. Heat the mixture over medium heat until hot, but do not boil.
  6. Use an immersion blender or a fork to froth the milk mixture until you reach your desired foam level.
  7. Pour the frothed chai latte into a mug and serve immediately.

Notes

Making the chai concentrate in advance allows you to prepare a quick latte when you want one. One batch of concentrate makes about 4 lattes.
