Course: Appetizer
Cuisine: Italian-American

Ingredients

For the Mozzarella Bites
  • 12 oz low-moisture mozzarella string cheese cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
For Serving
  • 1 cup marinara sauce warmed

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Small ghost cookie cutter

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Take each piece of string cheese and flatten it slightly. Use a small ghost-shaped cookie cutter to cut out ghost shapes. You may need to re-roll scraps to get more shapes.
  3. Set up three shallow bowls. In the first, place the flour. In the second, place the beaten egg. In the third, combine the panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Dip each ghost-shaped mozzarella piece first into the flour, then into the egg, and finally into the breadcrumb mixture, ensuring it is fully coated.
  5. Place the coated mozzarella ghosts onto the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the breadcrumbs are golden brown and the cheese is slightly softened. Be careful not to overbake, as the cheese can melt completely.
  7. Serve immediately with warmed marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

For a crispier coating, you can freeze the coated mozzarella bites for about 15 minutes before baking. If you don't have a ghost cookie cutter, you can simply cut the string cheese into 1-inch pieces and coat them as is.
