- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Grease and line a baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until just combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just incorporated. Do not overmix.
- Fold in the chopped chocolate and walnuts.
- Press the cookie dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the center is mostly set. The center may look slightly underbaked.
- Let the cookie cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes
You can substitute milk chocolate or dark chocolate for the semi-sweet chocolate. If you prefer a chewier cookie, reduce the baking time by about 3 minutes.
