Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water
For the Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Decoration
  • 1 bag Halloween-themed sprinkles
  • 1 package gummy worms or candy eyes

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Cake pans
  • Oven
  • Cooling rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Gradually stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While the cakes cool, prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the milk, beating until smooth and creamy.
  10. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  11. Once the cakes are completely cool, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting over the top.
  12. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake.
  13. Decorate the cake with Halloween-themed sprinkles, gummy worms, or candy eyes as desired.

Notes

You can add orange or black food coloring to the batter for a more festive look. For a spooky spiderweb effect, drizzle white frosting over black frosting and use a toothpick to create the web pattern.
